It doesn't!
Type in your question (a sensible spell checked questions with no punctuation apart from a question mark) and read the answer below. If it cannot be answered, send it, or, be happy that now you have a new question of the universe!
Questions with only an Expert answer are treated as Unanswered. A mistaken policy according to some.
only when unasked questions are asked
Scroll down the page until you see "Unanswered questions". It's on the right side at the bottom of the page. You can do the same on another page, for example the Science page has "Unanswered questions" at the bottom, for science questions only.
Go to Browse Categories. Choose a category. Scroll down. On the left, there is a link Unanswered. Click that and it will show only unanswered questions (unless someone just answered it).
Have you tried answering unanswered questions? The only reason that I can think of that you wouldn't be able to answer unanswered ones is that you were blocked. You might want to try writing to support and seeing if they can tell you what the status of your account is.
Only those who have registered on the site can edit answers, but anyone in the world who visits this site can answer an unanswered question.
No, The reason might be that there are alot of unanswered questions last time I checked over 8,000,000,000 Unanswered questions. And there is only over 2,000,000,000 Contributors not including the unregistered users. So it will take time but your answer will get answered sooner or later.
One thing that you could have done before the contest began (and still can), is correct typos. Sometimes, that will make it match another question with which you can recommend the unanswered question be merged, thus reducing the number of unanswered questions, although it will not make it a short list. The only other recommendation I have is to look under categories you feel you are likely to be able to answer quickly, but I noticed that many "How to" questions are only in that category and not in the other appropriate categories, so I have been trying to recategorize them as I go along.
Because this is a website that answers questions for people who need them ---- You don't HAVE to. Only questions you have no idea what the answer is.
There are many unanswered questions which defy an answer. Answers to many such questions can only be realized through spiritual means. I would say it is good to ponder on such questions - till you find a realistic meaning to life. Best wishes!
