Newts and salamanders need access to moisture. So they most likely would be found in areas where they could access water whenever they so needed. The likeliest places therefore are the utility room, the sun room, the screened in porch, the recreation room or den, the pantry or kitchen, the bathroom, the basement, or the attached garage. But in the wild, they're used to migration routes between where they live and where they get their food and mate. So it's possible that their home within the home is a cluttered, less frequented crack or cranny, such as in a closet, under a bed, or within the attic.
