One can locate a good patent, trademark or copyright attorney using the internet or local phone directory. When using the internet, search the American Bar Association listings or attorney referral service for your area. The local phone directory provides attorney contact information in your region; be sure to observe what area of law they provide before contacting.

Can you copyright the word bamboo?

Under U.S. copyright law, individual words cannot be registered for copyright. If "bamboo" is being used to identify the source of goods or services, it can (in general) be trademarked. (Thus, someone could have a restaurant named Bamboo and be able to keep other restaurants from using that name.) For more information on copyright in the U.S., see www.copyright.gov . For information on trademarks in the U.S., wee the website of the United State Patent and Trademark Office, www.uspto.gov. Note that the United States has both state and federal trademark law, so the use of a name may be protected even if it does not appear in the TESS database of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Does a school logo have copyright?

No. You could copyright a drawing or photograph of the logo but the logo itself would have to be protected as a trademark.

Can you trademark an area code?

No, you cannot trademark, patent, or copyright an area code, as such. However, you can trademark a name or logo that includes your area code. Just be aware that your area code could change, sometimes with less than one year's notice. Although that might reduce the value of your trademark, you would have no recourse against the state or federal government.

Do you copyright or patent an energy drink?

Neither, probably. Copyright is completely inapplicable in this case. You could copyright any distinctive text on the bottle (provided it were long enough... for example, the text on Rolling Rock beer bottles is probably copyrightable, but you can't copyright a short phrase, like a name). but you can't copyright a physical substance like the energy drink itself. Patent is probably also inapplicable. In order for it to be patentable, you would have to demonstrate that it is a new idea, one that isn't obvious from "prior art". Since there are plenty of energy drinks around already, this is going to be essentially impossible. What you've got left is trademark protection. You can trademark the name of the product, the logo, and possibly the design of the bottle, if it's distinctive enough (the shape of the Coca-Cola "hobble skirt" bottles was trademarked for many years; I'm not sure if it still is or not). Trademark protection is complicated enough you should hire an attorney to do it. Any bozo can handle copyright registration, but trademarks are a different story.

Can you patent a symbol?

Probably not; patents can protect new and useful processes, machines, articles of manufacture, compositions of matter, and improvements thereto.
