The black death was mostly cause of trade. If the trade was stopped, fleas and rats wouldn't get access to England. Therefore, the easier way to stop the Black Death is to stop the trade for a while.
They would keep Posey in their pockets and homes, to ward it off. They would also take some of the puss and such from the infected, cut people open a little, and infect them with a small amount. It was like a crude form of vaccination. They would also "bleed" people. They would cut them on their feet and such and just make them bleed, to bleed out the impurities.
Needless to say, these different methods, especially bleeding out a person, did not help and usually worsened a person's prospects. It was not until the advent of modern medicine that diseases such as this were finally put to rest.
