The Amazonian Guard (Gadaffi's hand-picked female guards) were likely as dangerous as typical bodyguards that warlords have. The Amazonian recruiters gave out a special training to interested volunteers and those who could resist the tough training were then trained in firearms and Martial Arts. The final selection was made by Gaddafi himself. So, it was not strictly a beauty pageant.
