"mustard gas" was used on the battlefields of WW1 and is still considered to be one of the most deadly of gas warfare weapons. I would also like to add a friend and neighbor of ours passed away 5 years ago from lung complications from Mustard Gas during WWII and that was confirmed by the attending doctor. It took years, but it finally caught up to our poor friend.

Chlorine was used in World War 1. It is a chemical element, and it is an extremely active oxidizer. A chlorine atom travels around with a buddy to make Cl2 which is what is called a diatomic molecule (two atoms combined to make a molecule). When chlorine comes in contact with water, it make hydrochloric acid, HCl, which is a very strong acid. Anyone who breathes in chlorine gas will be in very serious trouble. All the tissues that line the nose, the throat, and the lungs are moist, and HCl will form when Cl2 that is breathed in comes in contact with that moisture. Wikipedia has a brief article on the use of chlorine in WWI, and a link is provided.
