Yes you would think that a soft squidgy thing like a worm would not be able to dig. However worms can inflate the tip of their noses to be very hard. They can also inflate and deflate their noses very rapidly.

If yo go out to some damp soil and vibrate it, a strange thing happens, it seems to get wetter and goes soft.

As the worm vibrates its nose, the soil liquefies in front of it, and it as able to push its way through the ground.
