There has been just one flash flood in Australia in 2011. This wave, which came down a mountainside from the city of Toowoomba at the top of the range, reached heights of 8 metres, according to witnesses.
The remainder of the floods have been slow-onset floods, quite different to flash floods. They have varied in depth from a few millimetres to many metres deep - deep enough to engulf two-storey homes.
Flash floods are floods that happen quickly and without warning. Like they appear in a "flash".

Flash floods
During the Boscastle flash floods in August 2004, water levels reached as high as 10 feet (approximately 3 meters) in some areas. The intense rainfall caused the River Valency and River Jordan to overflow, leading to significant flooding in the village. The flash floods resulted in extensive damage to properties and infrastructure, but fortunately, there were no fatalities.
