Jihad is a word that actually means struggle or striving. It is not related to what is called by the west as holy war. It is a deeper personal meaning for Muslims that means a struggle for spiritual discipline. In Islam it can mean the on-going internal struggle to become a better person and to work to submit to the will of Allah.

- Personal struggle within one's self
- Struggle in the way of Allah (fighting for the sake of god)
When one struggles with his personal life, he is trying to perfect himself by doing the good and avoiding the bad. For example, he controls his anger when he has temper and tries to be as patient as possible with the problem that he is facing. It is a struggle to straighten himself and controlling all his temptations throughout his life to become a better, stronger person.
