What is diacerine tab?
Diacerine is diacetylrhein having chemical formula - C19H12O18. Diacerine was launched and promoted as a disease modifying drug for osteoarthritis. Diacerine 50 mg tab is available in India and largely prescribed for osteoarthritis. Marketed alone as 50 mg tab and / or with Glucosamine/chondroitin combination, it is claimed to alleviate symptoms of osteoarthritis. I too used this drug and observed significant gastrointestinal side effects like anorexia, nausea, vomiting, pian in abdomen and marked diarrhoea but no greater clinical efficacy over the drugs approved by FDA. No detailed studies like effects on hemopoitic system is available.
