One must keep in mind that slavery was NOT the only cause of the Civil War. There were many reasons for secession. Some states were against Abraham Lincoln being President, others wanted more power in the states than the federal government. One of the states, Kentucky, was the birthplace of Lincoln. Also, the five southern states that belonged to the Union did not know until the middle of the war that Lincoln would abolish slavery. Lastly, industry was growing and therefore there would be less of a need for people to do work because slaves were replaced by machines to do the work.

The Battle of Antietam was fought in Maryland on September 17, 1862. After the battle, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all the slaves living in the Confederacy.
