The Christian religion and the Catholic religion are the same thing, I think you are asking how the United States went from being protestant based to being Catholic based, and I really don't think that it ever did. There were certainly a lot of Catholics in the United States in the 1940's, and they tended to have much larger families than the protestants, but still they never came close numerically.
