They overcame it by supporting their country and supporting the war effort. Women and teenagers got jobs, people and families had ration books, fuel usage was limited, production of metal was limited, and much more. The World War I. War effort was Americas way of helping their country.

The question relates to WW2, but much of the answer (above) applied to that war also, plus the mighty effort put in by the US Navy and Marines to drive the Japanese out of the Pacific.
