The ending of the American Civil War is generally considered to be when General Lee surrended the Northern Confederate Army in April 1865. This however was not the end of hostilities. The southern Army in and around northern Georgia surrendered a few days later, and the last standing Confederate Army surrendered nearly a month later out west.
Additionaly, the Confederate leaders (mainly President Jackson) eluded capture for nearly 3 months after General Lee's surrender.
Lastly, the battles and bloodshed may have ended in 1865, but reconstruction efforts lasted for many decades afterwards, and also African Americans did not receive full established equal freedom until the late 1960s. These also may be considered a full end to the American Civil War.
