How the objects changed society [: Telephone People had to rely on mail, which often took weeks, months or even a year depending on where they lived. When the telephone was first introduced only the very wealthy could afford them and eventually the middle-class were able to have them installed in their home. It kept families connected (often families were split apart by war, or men had to go off to other States or Provinces or even other countries to find work. Just as the computer is a library at our fingertips, the first telephone was just as much magic and excitement. Along with the railroad, the telegraph helped spawn a mass, integrated, national market that brought the country and nations closer together than ever before. As the importance of telegraphy grew, demand for skilled telegraph operators grew with it. This growth created new opportunities for women to enter the workforce in greater numbers than ever before.
