Just to name a few things:
-American schools had bomb shelters and ran regular bomb drills, such protection included crawling under desks or tables and even crouching against walls with hands covering the face
-Families built personal fallout shelters that had heavy doors above ground and small rooms underground. The shelters had pipes with drafts that could be opened or shut to let in fresh air and housed stockpiles of canned food all throughout the 50's in case of emergencies.
Many people built fallout shelters at their homes, and took classes to learn about radiation.

bombing raids, i guess Uh, please check your history - the U.S. was never bombed during the 1950s. There was however great fear that the Soviet Union might attack the U.S. with its nuclear weapons, so people prepared for the worst by stockpiling food and water in underground bunkers.
Mainly in the United States, students in Public Schools had to practice a series of drills involved in an event of a nuclear attack. They were told basic things like "hide under your desk". Of coarse, in a nuclear attack this would do nothing at all. Drills like these were essentially propaganda "stunts". Also, the education students recieved in both the US and the USSR would most likley be bias, assuming that thier nation was winnning the arms race.
