Apollo 11 navigated using a combination of methods. Primarily, it relied on a radio signal between Earth and the spacecraft for real-time navigation data. Additionally, the crew had a backup method that used a sextant and a guidance computer. They took measurements of the angle between Earth's horizon (or the Moon's) and a chosen star. This information allowed the computer to determine their state vector, which is essential for accurately navigating to the right place around the lunar far side from where they could enter lunar orbit.
