Octavian, later titled Augustus Caesar, became the emperor of the Roman Empire by defeating the armies and navies of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. After the assassination of Julius Caesar, a civil war followed and Octavian & Mark Antony, along with his new wife, Cleopatra were rivals for control of the empire. The major battle that placed Octavian in control was the Battle of Actium in Greece.
