Rapp Moteren Werke was established in 1913 as an aircraft engine manufacturer. The company was purchased from Karl Rapp in March 1916 by Franz-Josef Popp and financier Camillo Castiglioni. Popp then merged with a neighboring aircraft manufacturer Gustav Otto to form Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke (Bavarian Aircraft Works). By 1917, the name was changed to Bayerische Moteren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works).
