Barack Obama's mother was a young single mom (his dad was not in the picture much) and she struggled financially, while she studied to get her degree and give him a better life. During times of insecurity and financial stress, it was his grandmother who stepped in, and it was she who really raised him. His grandmother also helped to come up with the money so that he could attend a good private school and prepare for college. She gave him stability when he needed it the most.
