The volcanoes were formed on a subduction zone where the Juan de Fuca oceanic plate plunges beneath the North American Plate. Magma was forced toward the Earth's surface to erupt, forming a chain of volcanoes - the Cascade Volcanic Arc - above the subduction zone.
