Prior to Constantine, the proto-Catholic-Orthodox Church had difficulty maintaining unity, and could not reach agreement on many issues of belief and Church practice. Breakaway groups formed and, sometimes, returned. Doctrine was sometimes decided by the most charismatic leader in the Church. Constantine saw the Church as a potential unifying force in the Empire, but knew that the Church could not unify the Empire unless it was, itself, united. He set out to impose order, creating a stable hierarchy under his leadership, and obtained consensus on important issues facing the Church. His support made membership of the Christian Church socially and politically desirable for some, thus leading to the surge in Church membership that enabled Christianity to become the state religion later in the fourth century.
By the time of the death of Constantine in 337, and indeed throughout the fourth century, Christianity remained a minority religion in the Roman Empire.
Constantine's Christian sons and successors continued to encourage Christianity and meet the expenses of the Church from state funds, meanwhile increasing the persecution of the pagan temples. Gnostic Christianity declined until it barely existed in the eastern Empire, while mainstream Christianity became split between Arianism and Trinitarianism. Just as Arianism appeared likely to prevail, Theodosius (378-395) outlawed it, made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire and banned the public worship of pagan gods. Conversion to Christianity gradually became a safer option than continuing to worship the old gods.
it was modernized. The Catholic chuch was split into Eastern and Western.
He had a vision of Christ and the next day he won a battle. From then on he took the way of the Christians and became the first Roman emperor to encourage Christianity and to be Christian.
We do not really know if or when Constantine converted to Christianity. Some believe that he converted when he had a vision of a cross in the sky, while others say that he had a death-bed conversion. On the first of these beliefs, Michael Grant (The Emperor Constantine) says, "It is a pity that this tale does not seem to be truthful, for more reasons than one."Certainly, Constantine's mother was an avid Christian and so there is no strong reason to believe that Constantine did not at some stage convert to Christianity. The problem is that we do not know when this happened, nor what happened afterwards.
