Dante Alghieri (May or June 1265 - September 14, 1321) was the author of the Divine Comedy, and most famous Italian writer of the Middle Ages, or any other ages for that matter. He was born in Florence and died in Ravenna. There is a link below for more information.
Most historians agree that the Renaissance began in Florence with the poetry and prose of Dante Alghieri, who is referred to as The Father of the Italian Language and "il Sommo Poeta" (the Supreme Poet). He lived in the 13th and 14th century.
