He attempted to join the armed services and the Civilian Conservation Corps, without success, and at age 19, Doris enlisted in the United States Navy with no rejections, at the Navy Recruiting Station in Dallas, Texas, on September 16, 1939.

Doris Miller was a mess attendant during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He first went to help carry wounded to safer quarters including the captain Then he went to the anti-aircraft guns to shot at the Japanese planes that were still attacking. He fired until he ran out of bullets. Then he was ordered to abandon the West Virginia because it was sinking.
