Yes they did, in WW1. No. Incorrect. An Australian, Lance De Mole invented the tank in 1912. He submitted it to the British War Office, but was rejected. and again in 1914, and 1916. Eventually they accepted. An English man took out a patent on a concept but never produced a working machine. De mole produced a working model. It travelled at 2.5 miles per hour. It is on display in the Australian War memorial.
