The British army arrived in Egypt in the 1880s and effectively massacred the Khedivite Turkish Armies. (The Khedivite Turks were the previous ruling government of Egypt and an Ottoman hold-over in the area.) After the Second Anglo-Egyptian War in 1882, the British were able to convince the Khedivites to surrender to British control in order to retain their throne and wealth. Instead of direct colonization, the British promised the Khedivites that they would retain most power over domestic affairs provided that they only made political choices that the British would approve of. The Khedivites agreed and the British retained this indirect control of Egypt until 1922 when the Kingdom of Egypt was proclaimed and British control substantially lessened.

How did Egypt become imperialized?

The term "imperialized" is confusing. If you mean to ask, how did Egypt become an empire, referring to the various Egyptian such as Ramses II or the Fatimid Caliphate, the answer is typically strong governance and an outward looking military policy. If you mean to ask, how did Egypt become colonized by the British Empire, the answer is that the British had superior military power and were able to force the Khedivites to concede defeat. The British then proceeded to use them as a puppet government to avoid massive spending on Egyptian infrastructure.
