In the Revolutionary War, Ethan Allen led the Green Mountain Boys along with Benedict Arnold on an attack against the British controlled Fort Ticonderoga. This fort served as an access point to the Hudson River and Canada. He surprised the British army posted there and forced them to surrender without having to fire a weapon. This was an extremely important military success because it was the first American victory of the war, and it supplied the Americans with much needed cannons that were captured from the fort.
