A notation is a system of written symbols used to represent numbers, amounts, or elements in something such as music or math. So scientific notation is the system used by scientists to simplify large numbers. And there isn't just scientific notation there's also stuff like electrical notation or musical notation. Years and years ago, some famous choir leader in the 16th century invented a system whereby the singers could see whether the pitch moved up or down, denoted by dots on three different coloured lines.
