If you haven't read on this it might be confusing. Usually trade was the main interagation bettween the Natives and the Europeans. When they traded they spread their culture, like in there clothes, food, and sometimes even folklore. In return the other party gave something out of his\her culture. If the person who reseved or listined to something they liked they added it on to their culture, and this spread, creating new cultures or slightly different ones.
