Gandhi wanted independence for the native people of India because he felt that the British colony was giving the native a raw deal in terms of land ownership and rights. He wanted Indians to have their own say in how political affairs are run.
In the 20th century, Gandhi's remarkable effort to help India achieve independence was motivated by two basic convictions. The first was his conviction that Indian people were worthy of independence on the grounds of their innate dignity and the development of their civilization. The second was his conviction that imperial rule by one nation over another was fundamentally wrong.
So the people of India could have self rule, and run their own country, and not be ruled by the British. Gandhi wanted the same thing for India, that the American Colonials wanted for the United States of America. Self rule, and not to be colony of another nation.
because he was not selfish and he wanted to fight for freedom for his country
and he wanted to die as a hero
because they wanted their own country (freedom)
His idea was to use passive resistance to British rule.

For helping India gain its independence in 1947. Gandhi was most famous for organising non-co operation campaigns. He was a man who did all his actions without violence. Gandhi boy cotted British goods, and even organised a salt march. Gandhi was an inspiring man, who risked his life for others. He was also imprisonned many times, but they would not kill him due to the fact it would have such a big, and bad impact.
Sorry, Gandhi really didn't receive any Nobel Prize at all. Even the Nobel committee consider it as the greatest mistake that ever made by it.However Gandhiji was nominated thrice for the Nobel peace prize.
