Noncooperation and peaceful resistance were Mohandas Ghandi's two major nonviolent weapons to bring about change that ultimately led to India's independence from Great Britain.

He required followers take a pledge of nonviolence.

His personal experiences when he was a lawyer in South Africa inspired him to fight discrimination. Upon his return toIndia in 1915, he encouraged worker protests against excessive taxes and discrimination. He campaigned for women's rights and against poverty and untouchability.

The Armitsar Massacre by British troops led to his first major organized protest. Indians began to forego foreign cloth for homespun clothing. His own homespun dhoti became a symbol of noncooperation, which took other forms, including the boycott of British institutions such as education and employment.

His 1930 Salt March to make salt in protest of the tax on salt was another proactive, hands-on protest.

He also fasted for personal purification as well as a form of protest, which would rally supporters, including sympathetic Westerners.

The scale and effectiveness of his protests employed skillful political, legal and media technigues as well as his oratory skills. His personal truthfullness and traditional Indian lifestyle, including being a vegetarian, carried weight with varying levels of Indian society. He became known as Mohatma or "the Great Soul."
