Washington conducted a major ruse to indicate that his armies were going to New York. In late August, 1781, the French and American armies began their march from White Plains, New York to Virginia, arriving in early September.
Between September 5 and September 9, a French fleet under Admiral deGrasse defeated the British fleet in Chesapeake Bay, leaving General Cornwallis stranded. The French ships ferried troops and cannons to complete the encirclement of Yorktown.
After a five-day bombardment, the combined American and French forces attacked and overwhelmed Cornwallis's fortified position on the night of October 14. The British commander was left with no choice but to surrender his nearly 8000 troops, which he did on October 19, 1781. This was the last major battle of the Revolutionary War.
