Germany gained territory through treaties and compromises at the start of the war. Gaining countries like Czechoslovakia, Austria and the Sudetenland. Germany broke it's compromises with England and invaded Poland. Than eventually France. At that point they had troops in North Africa.

The major flaw that allowed Hitler to gain so much land and territory prior to the start of WW2 was the apathy of the liberal philosophy of those in power within England at the time. Chamberlain was not a man that understood what was happening. (Yes, members of the Conservative party could have liberal theologies) He wanted peace at any cost and was willing to try to make deals with Hitler. Hitler took advantage of the naive' nature of Chamberlain and made deals he had no plan on honoring.

Moral of the story is that apathy is never a good idea. You need to learn from history and not make the same mistakes.
