In the Old Testament God made several covenants (promises) with man. These covenants included what man was required to do to gain God's approval. Every single time God made a new covenant with man, we did not follow through; we broke our end of the deal because we are humans and we fall short of God's glory. God fulfilled his promise to restore his relationship with humanity through Jesus. Jesus was made the final sacrifice, gaining God's ultimate approval for mankind. Jesus was God's son; only God could fulfill what he ultimately required of man. When someone realizes that they cannot fulfill God's requirements, all they have to do is believe in and trust in Jesus as the One who saved them from God's wrath through taking our place and dying for us. That is how man is reconciled with God, just by accepting Jesus as their Savior. Now instead of having to fulfill countless laws, requirements, and traditions, we just follow Jesus! It's that simple!
Additional Answer:
God restored us to Him via His Son, Jesus Christ. He became our Passover Lamb. God's Plan for mankind is given to us in His 7 Holy/Feast Days. The New Passover gifts Christ gave His followers are to be observed annually. He established His Father's Church, called the Church of God 12 times in the NT, 50 days after His death and Resurrection. This is the Feast of Pentecost - the 3rd holy/feast day. Four remain.
JUST following Jesus is the perfect example of how a Christian should walk. But we must know that Jesus followed all parts of the Law and even expanded its spiritual meaning or requirements. If anything, Christians must keep the letter and the spirit of the Law - fully. As only Christ could do this, He promised to ask His Father to send a 'Comforter/Helper' to assist the true Christian. This is called the Spirit of God/Spirit of Christ placing both in the Christian as Jesus is in the Father. We become begotten like Jesus awaiting our Resurrection to spiritual change to sons and daughters of the God Family - fully born again.
