democracy demo (δημος) : many people, all the people
oligarchy (a few men ruled) oliga (oloigoi): a few, a small amount
monarchy (one man ruled) mona (monos) : alone
They lived under the one in place, and if sufficient citizens wanted change, they revolted and installed the type they wanted. The moved from monarchy to oligarchy to tyranny to limited democracy to radical democracy and beck again as each type failed. Not ally types were tried by all city-states.

The Greek city states treated the government independently. This was because they knew that the city had its independent way of governing and government. It became very effecting in counteracting the politics at the time.
