For Hegel, ideas are the underlying reality of the universe. History then is the progress of ideas shaping the actions of individuals and communities. Ideas themselves, Hegel believed, were the products of consciousness. Hegel termed consciousness as an active force in the universe as Spirit, which he also identified with God.

Hegel had quite a difficult and complex theory as to how consciousness and ideas develop. The explanation that Hegel offers is called the 'dialectic'. The basic idea of the dialectic is that given a limited standpoint, the only way it is possible to come to a fuller conscious understanding is to consider the limitations presented as a basis to investigate further. The dialectic then is like a conversation and, in fact, has traditionally been the term used to describe argumentation.

Sometimes the process has been described as 'thesis' which is an initial presentation, 'anti-thesis' the contending position where the limitations are pointed out and another perspective is offered, 'synthesis' where these two standpoints come together to offer a deeper understanding and a fuller development of the idea.

This tension and resolution among standpoints is the basic process that Hegel ascribed to change generally in the universe and especially to the movement and actuality of consciousness or ideas.

How does Marxs theory reflect the ideas of previous philosophers?

Marx's theory of historical materialism builds on the ideas of philosophers such as Hegel, Feuerbach, and Smith. He adopts Hegel's dialectical method to analyze societal progression, Feuerbach's critique of religion as a tool for social control, and Smith's focus on economic systems and class struggle. Marx synthesizes these ideas to develop his theory of capitalism, class conflict, and the struggle for a communist society.

What type of influence did Hegel have on Hitler?

Hegel was the head of the philosophy department at the University of Berlin. His ideas about dialectics influenced Hitler, along with Marx & Lenin. In the mind and works of Hegel, he put forward the idea that the "State" surpassed the individual. As we saw later, Marx saw that but was in no position to do anything but theorize about it. With Lenin then Hitler, these men were in a position to bring Hegel's ideas into a harsh reality. For Hegel, the formation of the all powerful State was a vehicle by which the common man could reach, within the State's boundaries, his highest potential. For those believing in this concept ( as opposed to say the pre- Constitutional ) American colonists, who feared the power of a strong central government ) the population was "elevated" to new heights of glory by allowing State power to supersede the any individuals personal rights and/or ideas that did not place the State on a pedestal. What Hegel created was an idea that those not in agreement with State Power were committing treason. This fit in perfectly with the dictatorships of Lenin & later Hitler. Hegel also put forth the idea that in war, the weaknesses created in times of peace were supressed. Hegel was a fanactical German nationalist who believed under the leadership & examples of a war like Germany, the world would be better off. For Hitler, not only did Hegel give him the moral authority to place the State above individual freedoms, but supported Hitler's ideas about the "goodness" of war.
