Henry broke with the Catholic Church and formed the Church of England and divorced Catherine of Aragon so as to be able to marry Anne Boleyn.

More details

King Henry VIII's first wife was Catherine of Aragon. Catherine had originally gone from Spain to England to marry King Henry VII's oldest son, Arthur. The two were married in 1501 but Arthur died in 1502. King Henry VII did not wish to return Catherine's dowry and so had her stay in England. When Henry VIII became king, he asked Catherine to marry him. They were married on 11 June, 1509.

After quite a few stillborn children, a son who died at two months of age, and a daughter, Mary I, Henry came to believe that he was being punished by God for having married his brother's wife. He had found a Biblical passage to back up this belief. At this time he was also enamoured with Anne Boleyn who refused to become his mistress (her sister Mary had been one of Henry's mistresses). Henry was determined to have his marriage to Catherine annulled so that he could marry Anne.

Catherine refused to grant Henry the divorce he wanted, and Pope Clement VII was also refusing to grant the annulment despite Henry's best efforts to have him convinced to do so. Henry and Catherine became separated in 1531. Henry then began the Reformation of England so that he could divorce without permission from the Pope. Henry had Thomas Cranmer, the Boleyn family's chaplain appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. Cranmer secretly married Henry and Anne in January 1533. On 23 May, 1533, Cranmer, as the highest church official in England, declared Henry and Catherine's marriage null and void. Five days later, Cranmer announced Henry legally married to Anne Boleyn. This marriage forced a break from the Roman Catholic Church and brought the Church of England under Henry's control.

Anne was ultimately beheaded on charges of adultery, incest, and high treason in May 1536 despite unconvincing evidence.
