You can think of nationalism almost as an ego. Pride. In WWI, Germany was all about power. They had already been yearning for power and more land. So when the assassination of Ferdinand came and sparked WWI, hey along with a lot of European nations were already hungry. They joined because of their love and pride for their country and fought for control.

After WWI, Germany was blamed and was forced to pay ALL war damages. This sent Germany into an economic catastrophe. It was Hitler who not only said he could help with the economy, but that he felt that Germany needed "more land in which to grow and prosper". This started WWII. He started conquering Europe out of pride-- to regain what Germany had lost so it would be number 1 again.

All nationalistic goals.

One major way that Hideki Tojo showed his nationalism was that he was directly responsible for the of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, HI, even though it had already been planned before he entered office as Prime Minister. He was hanged for his war crimes.
