Hitler was hired by the German Army after World War 1 to spy on possibly subversive groups. One of his assignments was the newly formed German Workers' Party (DAP). He soon found himself attracted to their nationalist, and antisemitic ideas which closely matched those he already had. He quickly became its leader and ceased spying on groups for the German Army. The name of the party was then changed to the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) which in English was called the Nazi Party.
