Why has India got the second biggest population?

Poor people tend to have large families and, in consequence, poor countries tend to have a high fertility rate and more rapidly growing population. Over time, as the people of India become richer, it is likely that the country's fertility rate will naturally fall towards that of the developed economies of the world. In the meantime, the Indian government is encouraging smaller families.
