J. P. Morgan was a financier and banker who consolidated companies and controlled finances. He was behind the merger of Edison General Electric and Thompson-Houston Electric Company to form General Electric, and formed the United States Steel Corporation out of a set of smaller companies. His financial abilities were so great that he was able to rescue the national economy during the crisis of 1895 and the panic of 1907; on both occasions he made enough money to draw criticism.
