He died of cholera, but his sheer exhaustion after the four laborious years of office and the ceremonies attending his trip home had left his immune system ill-fitted to resist disease. An old illness shortly returned, and after a few weeks spent in looking to the improvement of his estate, he died. He probably had the shortest retirement of any former president in US history - less than four months.
