The US Treasury Department hired banker Jay Cooke to help finance the US Civil War efforts by marketing $500 million in bonds. With an interest rate of 6%, banks and the general public took a personal stake in the war.
This is a matter of opinion. I have been in a civil union and am now in a same-sex marriage. My personal opinion is that civil unions are a valuable step on the road to equality. Civil unions help people with respect to insurance and money matters. However, I personally find the two-tiered system created by civil unions to be offensive and insufficient. "Separate but equal" is a kind of segregation or apartheid that goes against American ideals.

During the US Civil War the US Treasury Department needed to help finance the costs of the war. The successful Philadelphia banker Jay Cooke was given a contract to market the bonds. Cooke was charged with raising $500 million worth of bonds to the general public. Cooke was successful and at one point he was marketing $1 million worth of bonds per day.
Yes, during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, some unions in New York and New Jersey restricted non-union workers from participating in recovery efforts. This was partly due to concerns over safety standards and job protection for union members. The unions aimed to ensure that work was done by trained professionals who met their standards, which sometimes led to tensions with non-union workers and relief efforts.
Unions help workers because it represents the voice of the masses instead of just one person who could be punished for speaking out. Unions help workers get raises, protect them from being fired unjustly, or treated unfairly. Unions are a force to be reckoned with especially where strikes are concerned. :) Katie

During the American civil war civilians donated belongings to help the war efforts. Civilians also volunteered with medical aid and made weapons and uniforms to soldiers.
Unions provide unity of numbers to force changes in working conditions.
The Wagner Act or National Labor Relations Act was part of Franklin Delano's Roosevelt's New Deal Program. It banned employers from interfering with the unionization efforts of their employees, and established the National Labor Relations Board. It was one of the most important legislative acts aimed at the protection of workers.
