God called him to be a prophet. He said that He had chosen Jeremiah from before he was even conceived.
Jeremiah initially says he does not know how to speak and that he is too young to be a prophet. God promises that He will give him the words to say and that He will be with him always. (Jeremiah chapter 1, verses 2 - 10).

∙ 13y agoWhen God called him, he expressed some misgivings, pointing out that he was '"ónly a youth". Evidently he was aware of his young age compared to the greatness of the task. Like all true prophets he did not seek this role for himself, but yet obeyed the call.
