During his lifetime Jesus attracted followers. This was because they believed his teachings. After he was crucified they saw him again, raised to life. This made them even more fervent in their devotion to him despite the fact that they were also in danger of suffering a similar fate.
Many people are attracted to Christianity by his teachings; they represent a very high moral standard that is attractive to many people, even though his teachings are hard to live up to.
Certainly Christians have done wrong things over time, and it is accepted that Charlemagne used the sword to expand his kingdom, and made the Saxon people convert from their traditional religion on pain of death. However, this kind of missionary expansion was not Jesus' plan: he taught his disciples to make "disciples" - willing followers - not force them to convert.
