The reason Jesus came to Earth was to give his life as a "ransom." - (Mat 20:28 "even as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.") When Adam sinned, he condemned all his children (us) to sin and death. - (Rom 5:12: Therefore, even as through one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed on all men inasmuch as all sinned) The sin we inherited includes a wage, or payment of 'death'. But Jesus life paid for our right to life. - (Rom 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.") This process was demonstrated when an animal's blood paid for daily sins in Israel's Temple. But those animal sacrifices didn't do the job completely. - (Heb 10:1-3 "For the Law which has a shadow of good things to come, not the very image of the things, appearing year by year with the same sacrifices, which they offer continually, they are never able to perfect those drawing near. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? Because the worshipers, when they had been once for all purged, would have had no more conscience of sin. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again of sins every year.") Each animal sacrifice forgave sins temporarily. Jesus sacrifice provided a permanent forgiveness of sins. - (Heb 10:14 "For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are sanctified." ) And, instead of a 'high priest' entering the temple with animal blood, Christ became his own 'high priest when he was resurrected. He went directly to God in heaven with the blood. (Heb 9:12 "nor by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood He entered once for all into the Holies, having obtained eternal redemption for us.")(Heb 9:24-26 "For Christ has not entered into the Holy of Holies made with hands, which are the figures of the true, but into Heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. 25 Nor yet that He should offer Himself often, even as the high priest enters into the Holy of Holies every year with the blood of others 26 (for then He must have suffered often since the foundation of the world), but now once in the end of the world He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.")

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." - John 3:16

Jesus' sacrifice - the death on the cross - was a sacrifice for all of humankind. In order to explain how it was (and is) a sacrifice, it is necessary to go back to the beginning.

In the beginning, when God created the world, and all living things (including man and animal) it was very good (Gen. 1 and 2). He gave a commandment to the first man (Adam) and woman (Eve): "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die (Gen. 2:16-17)." But Adam and Eve ate of the fruit anyway (Gen 3:1-13) and were cursed because they had not obeyed the one command from God (Gen 3:14-19). The first murder occurred shortly after (Gen. 4:6-8). Following generations were so sinful that God was grieved over the fact that He had made them (Gen. 6:7).

There were (and still are) no untainted people (Romans 1:18-32). No person or nation could attain righteousness on their own (Romans 3:23 and 4:1-24), not even Israel with the Old Testament Law (Romans 2:17-29 and 3:9).

So here we have all humanity wallowing in sin with no hope of redemption from sin and eternal life with God. End or story, right? Wrong. God, being the God of love that He is (John 3:16), provided the only way of salvation: Jesus Christ (John 3:16). By Jesus' death, his ultimate sacrifice, those who chose to believe and have faith in Him are saved from eternal death and sin (John 3:16 and Romans 4:18-25 and Romans 5:1-2).

Summery: The price for sin (which all people are under) is death. Jesus sacrificed for us by dying on the cross (Matthew 27:32-54) in our place, and opening the gate to salvation (i.e. eternity with God, freedom from sin being the monarch in our lives). Thanks God for your awesome grace!

Many people believe that Jesus saved us from our sins. How?

God sent his son, Jesus, to die for our sins, because he loved us so much. See, God cannot be around sin, so when we first started to sin, God could no longer be with us, and we could not go to heaven. But God loves us, and sent his son, who had never ever sinned, and he lived with us for approximately thirty-three years. He then was put on trial, found guilty, and sent to be crucified.

One Thought:

According to the Bible, in the beginning, Adam was a perfect sinless man(Genesis 1:31), a 'son of God'(Luke 3:38)who would live forever and 'fill the earth'(Genesis 1:28). Everyone coming from him, as his God-honoring and obedient descendants, would ALSO be born perfect and sinless. There was no mention of death unless connected to disobedience.

When Adam listened to the rebel Satan, and KNOWINGLY turned away from God (1 Timothy 2:14)by disobeying God's direct command(Genesis 2:15-17/Genesis 3:1-6), he BECAME a 'sinner'(Genesis 3:17-19), and with sin comes death(Romans 6:2). Because of Adam's selfish choice, the human family was 'sold into sin' through no fault of our own. As sinners, we had no hope....There was now a breach in the relationship between man and God, and we could no longer 'live forever' in perfect health and happiness as God had intended. We needed help and God immediately set out to fix the situation(Genesis 3:15)(Romans 3:21-26), using his prophets of old to foretell the coming of a Messiah(who would save mankind from sin) for centuries (Deuteronomy 18:18/Numbers 21:9+John 3:14/Galatians 3:16)(Genesis 22:18/Galatians 3:8).

God sent Messiah, his son, as a 'perfect man'(as Adam had been) to 'ransom' us, to 'buy us back'(1John 4:10; Hebrews 2:17)(Acts 4:12), to PAY for what Adam had done(1Timothy 2:5, 6; Ephesians 1:7). Eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, Perfect life for perfect life(Exodus 21:24/). Jesus was a perfect man, equal to Adam(1 Corinthians 15:45), but , unlike Adam,he remained FAITHFUL to God....even to his undeserved death. He never sinned, he never disobeyed, and though he had the ability to live forever, he gave that up and willingly died, as a sacrifice, to 'cover' the sin of Adam for us(1Peter 2:24; Isaiah 53:5) . He, in essence, replaced Adam as our father. (Isaiah 59:2; Habakkuk 1:13; Ephesians 2:3-5). He gave us a choice.

His sacrifice also paid for OUR Adamic sins (things we do unintentionally because we're imperfect)(1 Corinthians 15:3), and helped us to rebuild the relationship between humanity and God(Romans 5:11/1Peter 3:18)(Colossians 1:19-23). Ultimately he will destroy Satan and end Adamic death forever(Revelation 21:3+4).

Because of Jesus' unselfish sacrifice, we have a choice.

We can live our lives according to our selfish 'father', Adam, and ignore God's council, and ultimately die forever(Hebrews 10:26-31), OR we can 'exercise faith' in Jesus' sacrifice(John 6:40/Romans 1:17), follow his example and laws, and live forever(John 3:15+16) in a united worldwide Christian brotherhood(Romans 8:32/1 John 3:16). Our choice.

Why would anyone think that Jesus was not sent to earth to save us from our sins?

AnswerThere are many reasons people could fail to believe that Jesus was sent to save us from our sins: They may, for example, be Hindus, and believe that Brahma did not send Jesus. Therefore, to a Hindu, Jesus was merely a man. They may be Jews, who believe in God, but do not believe that Jesus was sent by their God.They may be Muslims, who believe in the same God, but do not believe that Jesus was sent by God to save us from our sins. They believe that Jesus was merely a prophet. They may not believe in God. If God does not exist, he could not have sent Jesus.
