The Archangel Gabriel came to Muhammad (pbuh) in the cave and commanded him to 'Read'. Muhammad (pbuh) replied 'I cannot read.' At this the Archangel took Muhammad (pbuh) in his arms and pressed him to him until it was almost too much to bear. He then released him and said again 'Read.' 'I cannot', replied Muhammad (pbuh), at which the Archangel embraced him again. For the third time the Archangel commanded Muhammad (pbuh) to read, but still he said he could not and was again embraced. On releasing him this time, however, the Archangel Gabriel said:

"Read: In the Name of thy Lord who createth, Createth man from a clot. Read: And thy Lord is the Most Generous Who teacheth by the pen, Teacheth man that which he knew not. (Koran xcvi.1-5) Muhammad (pbuh) repeated these verses, just as the Archangel had said them.

If a non Muslim believe in Allah and Muhammad pbuh can he then marry a Muslim girl?

So until he bears witness that there is no God except Allah, the one and only one God, and that Muhammad is the His prophet and Messenger, and believe in the Islam five pillars then he is a Muslim, and it will be permissible for her to marry him.More detailsThe word "muslim" means the one who has surrendered. Surrendered to whom? To Allah, the Only One God and to surrender to Him means to worship Him( in the way He prescribed through our Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)) and to obey Him and please Him in all our actions, intentions and deeds (which again can be followed through the example of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).** A Muslim woman can only marry a Muslim because Allah says in the Quran:"And give not (your daughters) in marriage to Al-Mushrikoon till they believe (in Allaah Alone) and verily, a believing slave is better than a (free) Mushrik (idolater), even though he pleases you. Those invite you to the Fire, but Allaah invites (you) to Paradise and forgiveness by His Leave, and makes His Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) clear to mankind that they may remember"[al-Baqarah 2:221]Allah says in the Quran that a Muslim slave will be better because he will try to help his wife worship and obey Allah which will not be possible with a non-Muslim husband, it may be that he may encourage in a subtle manner to go astray from Islam and its practices. And Islam should prevail in the home of every Muslim. So until he bears witness that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, then he is a Muslim, and it will be permissible for her to marry him.The three conditions for a marriage is that her suitor must be a good and practicing Muslim and her guardian (her father) must agree (to ensure the suitor is true to his word) and the woman to be married must give her consent."Women impure are for men impure, and men impure for women impure and women of purity are for men of purity, and men of purity are for women of purity: these are not affected by what people say: for them there is forgiveness, and a provision honorable." Surah an-Noor (24):26.And Allaah knows best.**Allah sent a Prophet to a group of people in every period of time. The first being Prophet Adam (pbuh) and others following him like Noah (Nuh), Abraham (Ibrahim), Jonah (Yunus) and Moses (Musa) peace be upon them. The last being Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) who has been sent to all of us until the end of time. This is why Allah's Book, the Quran, and the sayings of the Prophet (pbuh) are still preserved. Allah sent Prophets to show their fellow humans how best to worship Him in an easy and practical way. He also gave us the choice to believe in Him by sending us a human Messenger. This life is simply a test with so many chances and signs for us to accept, surrender and believe.EXTRA:The most important factors for a woman in choosing a husband are his attitude/behavior and his commitment to religion. Wealth and lineage are secondary matters. The most important thing is that the potential husband should be religious and have a good attitude, because if a man has religious commitment and a good attitude, a woman has nothing to lose: if he keeps her (remains married to her), he will keep her on a reasonable basis, and if he divorces her, he will set her free on a reasonable basis. Moreover, a man who is religious and has a good attitude will be a blessing to her and her children, for they will learn good manners and religion from him. But if the prospective husband is not like that (is not religious), she should keep away from him, especially those who take the matter of prayer lightly or who are known to drink alcohol. We seek refuge with Allah. As for those who do not pray at all, they are disbelieving and it is not permissible for them to marry believing women. It is important for the woman to focus on the matter of attitude and religious commitment. With regard to the matter of lineage, this is a bonus. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If there comes to you (to propose marriage to your daughter etc.) a man with whose religious commitment and attitude you are pleased, then marry (your daughter) to him."But if you can manage to ensure compatibility (in terms of lineage and socio-economic status, etc.) as well, then this is better. From the Fataawa of Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen, from the book Fataawa al-Mar'ah http://islamqa.com/en/ref/6942

Why is the Qur'an and Sunnah important?

Praise be to Allaah. The Qur'aan is the word of the Lord of the Worlds, which Allaah revealed to His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), to bring mankind forth from darkness into light:"It is He Who sends down manifest Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) to His slave (Muhammad) that He may bring you out from darkness into light[al-Hadeed 57:9 - interpretation of the meaning]Allaah has told us in the Qur'aan the stories of the earlier and later generations and the creation of the heavens and the earth. He has explained in detail what is halaal and what is haraam, the basics of good manners and morals, the rulings of worship and dealings with others, the lives of the Prophets and the righteous, and the reward and punishment of the believers and disbelievers. He has described Paradise, the abode of the believers, and He has described Hell, the abode of the disbelievers. He has made it (the Qur'aan) an explanation of all things:"And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur'aan) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allaah as Muslims)"[al-Nahl 16:89 - interpretation of the meaning]The Qur'aan explains the names and attributes of Allaah and what He has created. It calls us to believe in Allaah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers and the Last Day:"The Messenger (Muhammad) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allaah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. (They say,) 'We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers' - and they say, 'We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all)'"[al-Baqarah 2:285 - interpretation of the meaning]The Qur'aan describes the Day of Judgement and what will happen after death - the resurrection, the gathering, the judgment and being brought to account. It describes the Cistern, the Siraat (bridge over Hell), the Balance [in which deeds will be weighed], the blessings and torment, and the gathering of mankind on that great Day:"Allaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Surely, He will gather you together on the Day of Resurrection about which there is no doubt. And who is truer in statement than Allaah?[al-Nisaa' 4:87 - interpretation of the meaning]The Qur'aan calls us to examine and ponder the signs of Allaah in the universe and the verses of the Qur'aan:"Say: 'Behold all that is in the heavens and the earth'"[Yoonus 10:101 - interpretation of the meaning]"Do they not then think deeply in the Qur'aan, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)?"[Muhammad 47:24 - interpretation of the meaning]The Qur'aan is the Book of Allaah for all of mankind:"Verily, We have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the Book (this Qur'aan) for mankind in truth. So whosoever accepts the guidance, it is only for his own self; and whosoever goes astray, he goes astray only for his (own) loss. And you (O Muhammad) are not a Wakeel (trustee or disposer of affairs, or guardian) over them"[al-Zumar 39:41 - interpretation of the meaning]The Qur'aan confirms the Books which came before it, the Tawraat (Torah) and Injeel (Gospel), and it is a witness over them, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):"And We have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the Book (this Qur'aan) in truth, confirming the Scripture that came before it and Muhaymin (trustworthy in highness and a witness) over it (old Scriptures)"[al-Maa'idah 5:48]After the Qur'aan was revealed, it became the Book for all of mankind until the Hour begins. Whoever does not believe in it is a kaafir who will be punished with torment on the Day of Resurrection, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):"But those who reject Our Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), the torment will touch them for their disbelief (and for their belying the Message of Muhammad)"[al-An'aam 6:49]Because of the greatness of the Qur'aan and the signs, miracles, parables and lessons contained therein, in addition to its eloquence and beautiful style, Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):"Had We sent down this Qur'aan on a mountain, you would surely have seen it humbling itself and rent asunder by the fear of Allaah. Such are the parables which We put forward to mankind that they may reflect"[al-Hashr 58:21]Allaah has challenged mankind and the jinn to produce something like it, even one soorah or one aayah, but they could not do that and will never be able to do that, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):"Say: 'If the mankind and the jinn were together to produce the like of this Qur'aan, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they helped one another'"[al-Israa' 17:88]Because the Qur'aan is the greatest of the heavenly Books, the most complete, the most perfect and the last of them, Allaah commanded His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to convey it to all of mankind, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):"O Messenger (Muhammad)! Proclaim (the Message) which has been sent down to you from your Lord. And if you do not, then you have not conveyed His Message. Allaah will protect you from mankind" [al-Maa'idah 5:67]Because of the importance of this book and the ummah'sneed for it, Allaah has honored us with it. He sent it down to us and has guaranteed to preserve it. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):"Verily, We, it is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur'aan) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption)" [al-Hijr 15:9]Source: From Usool al-Deen al-Islami by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ibraaheem al-TuwayjriAnswer is also located at Islam Q & A (http://www.islam-qa.com/en/ref/10197/)Quran is the base of Islam and is collection of revelations of Allah (God) to prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

How many ayats are in surah anfal?

Surah Al Anfal is a Madani surah. It has 75 ayaat. Al-Anfal means ‘Spoils of War’ and it was revealed concerning the Battle of Badr. Muslims can always count on Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala’s Help when they fight for the right cause. He sent 1000 angels to help the small Muslim army with Jibreel ‘alayhi salaam and Mikail ‘alayhi salaam as the commanders of the warrior angels. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala helped the Muslims win the Battle of Badr. Seeking forgiveness from Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has many advantages. One such advantage is that His punishment will never reach a community where its inhabitants are engaged in Istighfar. Surah al-Anfal goes into detail about the distribution of war booty. Prior to the revelation from Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala about the method of distribution, the soldiers usually divided the booty among themselves. With the advent of the new Muslim community, new rules were enforced. One-fifth of the war booty was given to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and His Messenger salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and the rest to his near relatives, the orphans, the needy and the stranded traveler. It was ordained by Almighty Allah. The near relative of Prophet Muhammad salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was the Banu Hashim and the Banu Mutallib, both were ineligible for zakah. Ayah 43 is a beautiful ayah. Here Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala shows us a glimpse of His love for Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam and the believers. At the time of the battle of Badr, there was a handful of Muslims in Madina. When the battle of Badr was imminent, the Muslims felt afraid due to their small numbers. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala showed a dream to Prophet Muhammad salAllahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam that the number of the enemy as very few. It strengthened the believers and gave them courage and patience. “...Indeed Allah is with the patient.” (8:46) The number of hypocrites residing in Madina was rising. At every turn, they were trying to incite trouble within the Muslim community. They wanted the Muslims to be defeated in all battles against the disbelievers, and desperately tried to avert others from joining the Muslim army. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala rebuked and exposed these two-faced people. Since hypocrisy resides in the hearts, only the Creator would know the truth. In ayah 67 of surah at-Tawbah Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala states: “The hypocrite men and women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands...(refuse to spend in the way of Allah).” Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala contrasted the attributes of a believer in ayah 71 of this surah: “The believing men and women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and establish prayer and give zakah and they obey Allah and His Messenger...” Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala’s anger towards this heinous group included the commandment to His Messenger salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam that he could not even pray janaza salah for a dead hypocrite.
