John Forrest explored some of Australia's most inhospitable countryside, in Western Australia. He managed to do this through simple planning. He understood the dangers of the countryside, so he planned to take suitable supplies, water being the greatest necessity, and basic foodstuffs such as flour and tea. in addition, he took plenty of firearms and ammunition so his men could hunt kangaroos and other animals if necessary.
Forrest explored on horseback. He did not take camels, surprisingly, given their endurance in harsh countryside, but he ensured he looked after his horses well, in order to keep them in the best condition.
