Joseph Lister (1826-1912) developed a carbolic spray in 1869 to use in operating theatres, thus reducing the number of deaths from infection after successful operations.
The main thing Lister used was simple sanitation. Things like hand washing and clean clothes were a pretty radical idea, and Lister actually caught some flack over it. At the time, a bloody apron was a sign of experience in a surgeon. Things like bacteria were rather laughable. It was believed infections were caused by miasmas, and maggots spontaneously formed. Lister was also a forerunner in antiseptics. He used carbolic acid as a disinfectant, and developed other antibacterial solutions.
What jobs did Joseph Lister have throughout his life? He worked as mechanic in his early adult life then later on went on to teaching mechanics to others to those interested in building an fixing of engines.
Even before the medical community had embraced the germ theory, two physicians had observed that the use of sloppy methods and contaminated instruments during surgery led to increased mortality of the surgical patient.

Sir Joseph Lister, Baron Lister of Lyme-Regis, was a famous English surgeon who became the world's foremost authority on preventing infection of wounds and surgical incisions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through observations and experiments, Lister became convinced that cleanliness could prevent many infections in operating rooms and surgical wards. After hearing of the research of French scientist Louis Pasteur showing that rot was caused by micro-organisms, Lister pioneered the use Carbolic Acid (Phenol) to kill disease organisms in hospitals. In Lister's own words:But since the antiseptic treatment has been brought into full operation, ... my wards, though in other respects under precisely the same circumstances as before, have completely changed their character; so that during the last nine months not a single instance of pyæmia, hospital gangrene, or erysipelas has occurred in them. As there appears to be no doubt regarding the cause of this change, the importance of the fact can hardly be exaggerated.Although the use of Carbolic Acid has given way to safer antiseptics, Lister's principles continue to guide medical practice to this very day. The following link leads to Lister's 1867 medical journal publication reporting his findings, one of the masterpieces of applied science.

Type your answer here...He had researched gangrene and infection, Lister had seen carbolic spray used to treat sewage, after experiments he found that a thin mist of carbolic acid sprayed over the wound during surgery limited infection. By following this with careful bandaging the wound would heal without any gangrene or infection.
