It depends which point of view you look at. The Patricians or the wealthy citizens of Rome did not like Caesar and thought that he was an evil, foolish tryant. The Plebians or the poorer class of citizens sort of like him. Julius Caesar wanted support of the Plebians because they were a much bigger population of people than the Patricians were. The Patricians did not Caesar to rule ROme and his family after him. Julius Caesar did perform good acts but was very ambitous or arrogant. He was blinded by power.
Julius Caesar began his rise to power in 60 B.C.E. by forging an alliance with another general, Pompey, and a wealthy patrician, Crassus. Together, these three men assumed control of the Roman Republic, andCaesar was thrust into the position of consul.

Julius Caesar became popular with the Roman people for organizing large public festivals. His popularity allowed him to win numerous elections over opponents that were more prestigious and he won great political power by allying himself with Crassus and Pompey, the two most powerful officials in Rome. After serving as consul, he won greater fame for his conquests in Gaul. He achieved complete power over Rome during the Roman Civil War. He defeated Pompey and the Senate's armies in Spain, Greece, and Syria. More importantly, he spared Roman citizens from violence during the war and shared his wealth freely with the Roman public after his victorious return to Rome.
Julius Caesar gained power by a combination of determination, luck, following the system and his own personal charisma. To begin with, Caesar had a very likable personality and could reach out to anyone. He was a great public speaker and his orations gained him followers which resulted in votes. He followed the system and was elected to the various positions in the proper order, proper time, and at the proper age. His elected career culminated with him being consul in 59 and then the governorship of Gaul. In Gaul, he added that territory to the empire, was part of the first triumvirate, and kept himself in the public eye by writing his history of the Gallic wars and sending parts of them back to Rome, almost like a series. These writings were written in Latin rather than the Greek that most of the elite used, and could be read by all Romans. The civil war and Caesar's multi-extended
dictatorships followed.

Yes, Marcus Brutus compares Julius Caesar to a serpent's egg which when hatches results in the existence of the poisonous serpent which if grows to its kind, becomes dangerous. Similarly, Julius Caesar, if bestowed with the crown, would become so powerful as to endanger the peaceful lives of the Romans.
